Entry Level Camera Skills

This introductory course will use MiniDV cameras and teach basic production techniques. This is a fun course that has a lot of practical using the video camera, tripod and mics. It is important to understand the collaborative nature of film making, this will be stressed throughout the course.


Agreed learning outcomes. At the end of the course, the learner should:

  • Set up camera and mount on a tripod
  • Carry out the necessary preparations of the camcorder before use
  • Plug in external microphone and monitor the audio signal
  • Describe the meaning of some basic filmic terms
  • Frame a shot to concentrate on the centre of interest
  • Describe the colour differences between daylight and tungsten lighting
  • Use basic camcorder shooting facilities to make a short film edited in camera
  • Correctly log tapes and label appropriately
  • Observe relevant Health and Safety practice with regards lighting, cables and fire hazards
  • Describe how to hold the camcorder safely
  • Identify principal crew members and their different roles
  • Produce a basic lighting setup
  • Understand how to work collaboratively
  • Correctly place microphones
  • Recognise the use of a number of different camera movements
