Coleman Projects Space Media Kiosk

Coleman Projects Space Media Kiosk

There was a need for the gallery to have a computer interface for searching the Coleman Projects website and playing DVDs.

This tool assists both disabled accessibility (wheelchair access is difficult in back gallery space) and also works as an interactive archive and advertising tool (an alternative to the ubiquitous gallery comments book).

Coleman Website

Description:

  • Needed to be cheap
  • Used old donated computer and monitor
  • Bought wireless card, DVD rom drive and wireless ADSL router from PC world
  • Setup wireless network across the house
  • Machine can be used to upload content and edit the www.colemanprojects.org.uk website
  • Restricted access to relevant URLs e.g. www.colemanprojects.org.uk and reap project
  • Currently configured for Windows 98
  • Plan to setup Ubuntu installation after using this system on another machine and realising the stability, ease of customisation and free opensource desktop software
  • Next step is to buy a cheap graphics card, to allow for proper playback of DVDs (Pentium 3 machines don't have enough processing power), and RAM for the machine to function well in Linux Gnome desktop
  • Firefox will be customised to work only in kiosk mode
